Tomorrow is October 1st, which means Halloween projects are starting to appear. This year I’m steering away from the usual heavy spider-web motifs and dramatic black styling so common at this time of year. Instead I’m focusing on simple, versatile DIYs that work for Halloween but can also be used year-round for birthdays, weddings, and other gatherings.
Today’s project is a straightforward favorite: dyed Halloween treat bags. These are easy to make, customizable, and require very few supplies. The technique—tying and dyeing—gives each bag a unique pattern, so no two will look exactly the same.
The supplies needed are minimal: rubber bands, fabric dye, and plain muslin bags. That’s it. You can use the same approach on small favor bags, larger tote bags, or pouches if you want something more substantial than party favors. The project scales easily and the results are appealingly imperfect.
The basic technique is simple: fold and scrunch the fabric, secure sections with rubber bands, then submerge the bag in a dye bath made from fabric dye and water. The placement of bands and the folding method determine the final pattern, so spend a few minutes experimenting with different wraps and folds to get stripes, rings, or marbled effects.
Dip the tied bags into the dye bath and leave them until you reach the color intensity you like. Lighter dips create subtle color; longer immersion gives richer, bolder hues. After dyeing, rinse the bags thoroughly until the water runs clear, then launder according to the dye manufacturer’s instructions and let them dry completely.
Once dry, add treats. For loose candies, cookies, or anything that might leave crumbs, tuck a glassine bag or small cellophane pouch inside the muslin to keep contents tidy and fresh. The dyed exterior gives a festive, handmade look while the inner bag keeps everything sanitary.
There are many folding and binding techniques you can try: accordion pleats held with multiple bands for a striped effect, spirals for concentric rings, or random scrunches for a mottled watercolor look. Each method creates a different outcome, and experimenting with color combinations—monochrome, complementary hues, or unexpected mixes—keeps the process fun and creative.
When choosing dyes, consider the fabric and the intended use. Fiber-reactive dyes work well on natural fibers like cotton muslin and produce vibrant, long-lasting color. Follow the dye package instructions for mixing ratios, water temperature, and setting instructions to ensure colorfast results. Wearing gloves and working over a protected surface helps keep the workspace tidy.
After dyeing and washing, you can embellish the bags with simple touches if you like: hand-stamped initials, a small tag, or a stitched accent add personality without overwhelming the dyed pattern. For a seasonal touch, choose autumnal shades—deep oranges, muted purples, and smoky blues—or go bright and unexpected for a modern twist on holiday favors.
These dyed treat bags are ideal for classroom parties, wedding favors, small-business gift packaging, or just a thoughtful way to hand out candy on Halloween night. Because the technique works on larger pieces, you can also create matching tote bags for trick-or-treating or to use as reusable gift bags throughout the year.
