It’s that spiked apple cider time of year — one of my go-to fall cocktails. Have you tried it yet?

I’ve been making this spiked apple cider for a few years and it never disappoints. It’s the perfect cozy fall cocktail to warm you up and set a festive mood.
I’ve always loved homemade, non-alcoholic apple cider too, but after tasting a spiked version at a holiday gathering years ago I couldn’t go back — the boozy twist is delicious and instantly comforting.
It tastes great and warms you from the inside out.
I’m sharing this simple recipe because it’s ideal for holiday parties: it can be made in batches, served from a punch bowl, and looks beautiful on a table. That makes it easy for hosts and guests alike.

Is apple cider the same as apple juice?
No. Fresh apple cider and apple juice differ in processing and flavor. Apple cider is typically fresh, unfiltered juice with a more earthy taste and may be unpasteurized. Apple juice is filtered and pasteurized, yielding a sweeter, smoother flavor. Grocery stores usually carry apple juice year-round, while fresh cider is most commonly available in the fall.
Does apple cider contain alcohol?
Fresh apple cider does not contain alcohol. Hard cider, on the other hand, is fermented apple juice and is alcoholic — it’s the “adult” version of cider.
Is spiked apple cider a good choice for holiday parties?
Absolutely. Spiked cider is ideal for batch cocktails at fall and holiday gatherings. It’s easy to prepare in large quantities, looks festive in a punch bowl, and encourages guests to help themselves — which makes hosting simpler. Plus, a pretty punch bowl on the table is always a crowd-pleaser.
Because this cocktail can be batched and served from a punch bowl, guests can pour their own drinks and choose how strong they want them without interrupting the host.
Perfect for potlucks
This punch is also a great thing to bring to a holiday potluck once the food is covered — just check with the host beforehand. It’s an easy contribution that’s likely to be appreciated.
What alcohol pairs well with apple cider?
Apple cider pairs best with darker spirits. Whiskey, bourbon, dark or spiced rum, and brandy are especially good choices and complement the cider’s spice and apple notes.
Serve hot or cold?
Both. This recipe works hot or cold, so you can adapt it to the weather and the occasion. A warm version is lovely on chilly nights, while a chilled punch is refreshing and easier to prepare without a stovetop.

How to Make Spiked Cider Whiskey Punch
This spiked cider is a cozy favorite that’s easy to scale for a crowd. You can serve it warm from a pot or cold over ice from a punch bowl.
1. Combine the main ingredients
In a large container or bowl, combine the whiskey, apple cider, lemon juice, and water.
2. Add spices and stir
Sprinkle in the cinnamon and nutmeg, then stir to combine.
3. Serve over ice
Pour the mixture over ice if serving chilled. Taste and add honey if you prefer a sweeter, smoother finish.
4. Garnish
Float cinnamon sticks, apple slices, and orange rounds on top for a festive look. Candied orange peel, star anise, or edible flowers make pretty finishing touches.
Tip: On a really cold evening, heat the cider mixture in a large pot on the stove (without ice) so guests can ladle warm spiked cider into mugs. If you do this, hold the cinnamon sticks back and add them as you serve for a fresh garnish.
