Summer Entertaining Essentials: Must-Have Outdoor Hosting Gear

I’m spending as much time outside as possible before the summer heat becomes unbearable. The moment we moved in, I started arranging our covered backyard patio. It’s not finished yet, but it’s coming together and I wanted to share a sneak peek. With Memorial Day just days away, I also put together my go-to essentials for outdoor entertaining at the start of summer.

I partnered with Article to pull together the items that make hosting outdoors simple and inviting—perfect timing for Article’s large Memorial Day sale (up to 50% off), running through May 28th. Below are my favorite pieces and practical tips for summer gatherings.

Our covered patio sits just beyond a pair of doors off the living room. The first time we toured the house, I already pictured how I wanted this space to look—down to the table and chairs.

I know that sounds intense, but I keep a running list of favorite furniture and accessories for my “dream house.” Even though we’re renting, this house already feels like home more than any other we’ve lived in.

My Summer Essentials for Outdoor Entertaining

A place to gather. I love a large table with comfortable chairs for casual, communal meals. The table and chairs I chose from Article are my dream outdoor set. Both pieces come from the TÉAKA collection and are made of solid, raw, unsealed teak. Teak is a durable outdoor material that weathers beautifully—developing a silvery patina over time—so these pieces will last for years. The collection’s minimal silhouettes look high-end without feeling overdone, and they could easily work indoors as a dining set too.

My recommended setup: the TÉAKA dining table for six, four to six TÉAKA dining chairs (they’re surprisingly comfortable, especially with the seat padding), and the MIRA bench as extra seating you can slide up to the table when needed.

Summer entertaining essentials...grilled corn and peaches!

Great food. Always keep something to nibble on—guests often arrive hungry. I usually pick up a couple of specialty pre-made items and cook the rest. Easy grilled recipes are perfect for summer entertaining. Some favorites are grilled shrimp kabobs, lemon-and-herb corn on the cob, and grilled peaches with ice cream for a simple dessert.

Textiles. Neutral napkins and a textured rug quickly make the space feel intentional and comfortable. Napkins are a must for outdoor meals, and a jute rug works well on covered patios because it’s durable and complements outdoor wood tones. Add a few blankets and toss pillows for color, pattern, and extra comfort as the evening cools.

My textile picks include a lightweight throw for breezy nights, simple neutral linen napkins (or windowpane linen for a subtle pattern), and a durable jute rug to anchor the seating area.

A few good drinks. Offer both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options so every guest feels included. In summer I prefer light, refreshing drinks: a cucumber gin cooler or a pineapple rum punch are easy crowd-pleasers. For non-alcoholic choices, flavored or infused water keeps guests hydrated and tastes fresh outdoors.

Other summer serving essentials. Plates, cups, flatware, and serving trays are small details that matter. I prefer simple, durable pieces: clean white ceramics, recycled glass tumblers, basic flatware, and one or two distinctive trays for serving or displaying food.

Those are my core picks for summer outdoor entertaining. Did I miss anything essential? How do you like to host during the summer months?

Don’t forget to check Article’s Memorial Day sale before May 28th—if you’re not satisfied with a purchase they offer a 30-day guarantee and will arrange pickup and a refund (delivery and pickup fees typically apply). It’s a helpful option when buying large pieces for outdoor spaces.

P.S. If you like this outdoor space, stop back next week for an update on my upstairs balcony progress. I’m doing all the outdoor things this season and can’t wait to share more.
