Since moving into the studio two years ago, the upstairs has changed a lot — except for one relic: the patterned half wall. I loved it at first, but when you see the same pattern nearly every day, it eventually loses its charm. For the 12 Rooms in 12 Months series, I gave that section of the loft a refresh with help from Lowe’s, and I’m finally sharing the result and my go-to tips for getting a perfect paint finish every time.
The makeover replaced the busy pink pattern with a clean, solid rust color. The change felt so refreshing that I even added a daybed up there for the occasional work nap — which I’m definitely not mad about.

When choosing paint, I always paint large swatches directly on the wall and let them dry between coats. For this project I narrowed the choices at Lowe’s to three colors, brought samples back to the studio, and tested them on the wall. I used HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Infinity interior paint in a flat finish — I typically prefer flat paint for most rooms. The three colors I tested were: Red Cent, Emerald Shore, and Mod Yellow.
All three looked great on the wall, but I ultimately chose Red Cent — I can’t resist a warm rust/terra-cotta tone. Which one would you have picked?

Prep was simple: I wiped the surface with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris and then taped the trim with painter’s tape. Because the paint I chose is high-quality and has great coverage, I painted right over the existing pattern without priming. One solid coat transformed the wall and gave the whole loft a different vibe.
Painting is one of my favorite quick, cost-effective ways to change a space — a gallon of paint is often under $50 and the results are dramatic.

My Top 3 Tips for a Perfect Paint Job Every Time
1. Always prep your surface
Prepping is the step most people skip because they’re eager to get started, but it’s essential for long-lasting results. I sweep and dust the whole area before painting, then wipe surfaces with a damp cloth to remove any remaining dirt, dust, or grit that could prevent paint from adhering properly. Allow the area to dry completely before proceeding.

2. Use the right tools and quality paint
I don’t skimp on materials. Good tools and high-quality paint save time and often reduce the coats you need. I recommend a one-coat paint-and-primer formula like HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams Infinity for a smooth, even finish. Other essentials I always have on hand:
- High-quality painter’s tape
- Canvas drop cloths (canvas dries faster and traps spills better than plastic)
- A short-handle 2″ brush for trim
- A comfortable roller frame and the correct nap roller cover for your wall texture
- Metal paint tray and disposable tray liners
- Good-quality roller covers and brushes — they lay paint on more smoothly and shed less

3. Keep your application uniform
When rolling, keep your pressure, coverage, and paint thickness consistent. My approach: use long W or loose zigzag strokes with the roller, then smooth them out to distribute paint evenly. Roll as close to the trim edges as you can, making it easier to cut in with a brush for clean lines. Consistent motion and coverage prevent lap marks and deliver a professional-looking finish.

That’s it — the loft feels warmer and more grounded with the new color. I’m loving the earthy vibe upstairs and would love to hear your thoughts.
Do you like this rust color, or would you have picked something else? Share your opinion in the comments — I’m curious which color you would have chosen.
