Time for an Ikea hack!
My home office can get messy, so I’m always looking for simple ways to organize and streamline my desk. I wanted to create a clean, minimal upgrade for Ikea’s popular MOPPE mini storage chest and ended up designing custom wood-and-leather drawer pulls that instantly elevate the piece while keeping it practical and budget-friendly. The finished look is modern and organic, and the whole project costs only a few dollars beyond the chest itself.
I made the drawer pulls from scratch using basic woodworking and leather supplies. The result is a subtle, high-end detail that transforms the MOPPE chest into a stylish desk organizer. Below is a straightforward, step-by-step guide so you can recreate the hack at home.

For this DIY desk organizer you only need a few materials and common tools. The build is approachable for beginners and results in a long-lasting upgrade you can personalize by choosing different wood species or leather colors.
Materials and Tools
- MOPPE mini storage chest from Ikea
- 3/4 in x 36 in wood round dowel (choose a wood similar in tone to the MOPPE, such as poplar or pine)
- Leather straps or scraps
- Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
- All-purpose glue suitable for wood and leather (or super glue)
- Wood glue and/or screws plus a drill
- 1–2 bar or trigger clamps
If you prefer, a 48 in dowel works fine too. Look for wood that complements the chest for a seamless finish.

Quick tip: I have two MOPPE chests and swapped a large drawer between them so one unit has longer drawers for paperwork while the other keeps smaller drawers for craft supplies. This swap isn’t required, but it’s a useful option if you want to tailor storage to specific needs.

Step 1: Cut the dowel to size
Measure and cut the dowel pieces to match the drawer widths you plan to upgrade. For reference, I used:
- 10-inch dowel pieces for the full-length drawers
- 3.5-inch dowel pieces for the medium-size drawers
Trim the ends cleanly and prepare for sanding.

Step 2: Sand the dowel
Sand every cut edge and any rough areas on the dowel until smooth. This removes splinters and creates a nicer surface for the glue to adhere to and for the leather accents to sit against.

Step 3: Cut, wrap, and attach leather strips
Cut leather strips about 1/4 inch wide. Make each strip slightly shorter than the circumference of the dowel so it doesn’t overlap fully; this leaves a flatter area on the back for fastening. For smaller pulls, wrap the leather around the center of the dowel; for larger pulls, place strips near each end.
Adhere the leather to the dowel with a strong glue that bonds both leather and wood. Super glue or an all-purpose adhesive works well; some people use wood glue successfully. Allow the glue to fully cure before moving on.

Step 4: Attach the pulls to the drawers
Remove and flip each drawer so the back becomes the front—this hides the original notch and creates a cleaner appearance. Position the finished dowel pulls along the top edge and secure them with screws and a drill, wood glue, or a combination of both. If you choose wood glue, use clamps to hold the pulls in place until the glue fully cures according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
The result is a subtle, modern upgrade that’s sturdy and tactile. Screws provide immediate strength, while glue gives a seamless look if you don’t mind clamping during the cure time.
And that’s it—simple, effective, and stylish.

If you don’t own a MOPPE chest, this drawer-pull idea works on many small storage solutions—any drawer front that can accept a dowel pull will benefit from the same treatment. The combination of natural wood and leather suits minimalist, organic, and Scandinavian-inspired interiors.
