Earlier this week our only car broke down—again. It turned out to just need a new battery, so it wasn’t a major issue. Without the car, I’ve been walking a lot more: to work, back home, to pick up groceries. Now that the weather has finally started to cool, I don’t mind the extra steps. The walks are a slow, pleasant way to begin and end the day. Each trip takes roughly 30 minutes, which leaves time to think, listen to podcasts, and unwind.
On my walk home yesterday I started thinking about how some DIY projects mirror what I’ve been doing: gentle, low-stress tasks that help you wind down. Not every project is like that—many demand concentration, planning, or power tools—but there are plenty of simple, almost meditative DIYs that are perfect for easing into the weekend. If you’re looking for something calming to do over the next couple of days, consider one of these easy projects.
Here are six DIYs to try this weekend.
1. Painted DIY party favor bags for candy — a quick, customizable craft that’s satisfying and useful for gatherings.
2. Feta, rosemary, and pear crostinis — an elegant, simple appetizer to make for friends or to enjoy while crafting.
3. Gemstone soap DIY — a fun, colorful soap project that looks intricate but is straightforward to make.
4. Watercolor backdrop DIY — create a soft, artistic background for photos or parties with simple watercolor techniques.
5. How to alter vintage caftans — transform a thrifted or vintage piece into a fresh, wearable item with minor adjustments.
6. How to make a large-scale rug — a time-consuming but rewarding project; surprisingly easy and worth the effort for a custom floor covering.
These ideas range from quick and playful to more involved but still calming. If you want to try something edible, the crostinis are fast and delicious. If you prefer hands-on crafting that doubles as décor, the painted favor bags or watercolor backdrop will keep you engaged without overwhelming you. For a giftable or practical project, gemstone soaps are beautiful and useful, while altering a vintage caftan breathes new life into an old favorite. And if you’re ready for a weekend-long commitment, a homemade rug delivers a unique, handmade statement piece.
Quick note: shout out to my friend Kelly from Studio DIY, who recently opened a colorful Halloween costume shop filled with mix-and-match pieces for creative, standout costumes. Congratulations on the launch!
Wishing you a relaxing, creative weekend.
