I was at Ikea recently looking for a clothing rack and ended up wandering the store with time to spare. I picked up a few small items and when I spotted the cork coasters, I grabbed several sets. They’re inexpensive—around $1.49–$1.99 per set of two—and inspired two quick DIY projects. This is the first: a simple two-tiered ring dish and jewelry stand. What I love about projects like this is how affordable and practical they are, and how little time they require. From start to finish this stand took me about 20 minutes, including cutting and drilling. It’s an easy, approachable craft you can finish in one afternoon.
Below are clear steps to build your own DIY jewelry stand in under 20 minutes for less than $10.
Materials and Tools
- Ikea cork coasters — one set of the larger size and one set of the smaller size
- Dowel rod, approximately 3/4 inch diameter
- Saw (a hand saw or a compact circular saw will work)
- Drill with a 3/4 inch spade bit
- Sandpaper (optional, for smoothing cut edges)
- Scrap wood (optional, to protect your work surface while drilling)
Step-by-step Instructions
1. Cut the dowel rod to length. A dowel about 6–8 inches long works well for a compact two-tier stand. If the cut end feels rough, lightly sand it to smooth the edges.
2. Drill a hole through the center of each cork coaster using a 3/4 inch spade bit. Place a piece of scrap wood under the coaster to protect your table when the drill breaks through.
3. Insert the dowel through the smaller coaster first. Pushing the dowel from the top and pulling it through helps minimize damage to the cork around the drilled hole.
4. Slide the larger coaster onto the dowel so it becomes the base. Make sure the dowel sits securely in the holes. If you prefer extra stability, add a small bead of hot glue where the dowel meets the cork, but it’s not strictly necessary.
5. Add your rings, earrings, and small pieces of jewelry. The two-tier design keeps frequently worn items easily accessible while providing a tidy display.
