For me, the ideal spring-to-summer outfit channels the 1970s: an off-the-shoulder striped top, flared jeans, oversized earrings, and a distinctive sandal. That retro-meets-Miami mood feels effortless and playful—perfect for sunny days and casual outings.
I had the chance to style our model from the DIY flower hat project in exactly that combination, and I’m sharing some outtakes from the shoot along with options to recreate the look yourself. Read on for details and alternatives that capture the same vintage-inspired vibe.
SUMMER OUTFIT: HOW TO GET THIS LOOK
SHOES The sandals in the shoot were a Rachel Comey pair, which are no longer available. A similar, versatile option is a simple strappy sandal from Charlotte Stone—stylish, clean, and available in several colors that work well with a minimalist summer outfit.
TOP The striped knit tee is very Madewell in spirit: off-the-shoulder, ribbed stripes, and decidedly 70s. It’s the kind of piece that instantly gives an outfit retro flair—something my mom might have had in her closet years ago.
JEANS The flared jeans shown were an Anthropologie sale find. If you can’t find that exact pair, look for flares with a button fly or subtle vintage details—Anthropologie often has similar styles that evoke the same silhouette.
BAG While a bag wasn’t pictured in every shot, a woven straw tote—like the Loeffler Randall beach bag—pairs perfectly with this look, adding texture and a relaxed, summertime touch.
EARRINGS Oversized, playful earrings are essential to selling the 70s aesthetic. The Lila Rice styles from Bona Drag used in the shoot are a favorite for their bold shapes and handcrafted feel.
HAT The straw hat worn in the shoot is from Samuji and is on the pricier side. For a budget-friendly alternative that still reads chic and summery, consider a similar straw style from Urban Outfitters priced around $49—simple, flattering, and easy to wear with retro-inspired outfits.
